I have a quick question – I am trying to import audio – and everything that I import comes in a tone lower and a little slower than what it is… what is going on?
LP8 – and how do I check sample rates? (I feel like such a newb)
Right click on the audio file in the finder and choose “Get Info” or use the key command, CMD+i. You’ll see the sample rate under the “More Info:” heading. In Logic, choose File > Project Settings > Audio (or use the Open Audio Project Settings key command) to check the sample rate.
okay – I checked and fiddled around, got them the same, and still it is slower and down a tone- I tried making the sample rate higher, and it sped it up way to much… I am totally confused
Thank you by the way! something all of a sudden just worked in the fiddling around – thanks for your help!!
Hello. I have installed on my imac LP8 Academic. I just bought LP9 Academic. Do I need to uninstall LP8 first? If so, how do I do that completely so I dont have duplicate files etc (academic versions supposedly dont allow updates). Also, will I be losing any instruments/ loops if I uninstall 8 and install 9? Thanks in advance for the help…
I cover that in the video. But you don’t need to uninstall Logic Pro 8.
Thanks. I watched the video before posting. I wasnt sure if the fact that my version is the ACADEMIC version would change things since that version is supposedly not upgradable. Sorry if I caused any confusion. I saw in the video that many of the install prompts said “upgrade” when you were installing, and wanted to make sure I wouldnt be having problems since I’m not supposed to be able to upgrade… Do you forsee any problems?
No worries. The only thing different is your license, not the software. So you follow the same procedures as everybody else. Hope that clears it up for you. You won’t have any problems by upgrading.
Thanks a ton! That does clear things up.
Hi Mike,
I recently saw a post where someone asked about setting up a compressor for vocals and you’d sent him an e-mail.
Any chance I coulod have the same e-mail, I’m struggling to come to terms with compressor settings. I’m really only looking for vocals and acoustic guitar.
Cheers
Graham
Sorry Graham, should have been Hi Graham not Hi Mike.
I might have said something like this…
Have you checked out the vocal channel strip settings? They’ve got some great starting points there. And that’s all anyone can give you because the voices, mics, and room play some much into the overall sound. Get the best sound into the machine, and then compress and EQ to taste. If you’ve got a sound you’re going for, you could add it to an audio track and A/B them as you mix.
Graham- I enjoyed watching your training videos and have learned much. I am still a newbie to Logic, but have created some pretty amazing projects.
This might seem simple but I am having a difficult time understanding auto punch in and out. The current project I have a vocalist who lay down her main vocals….lack in a good back up singer. I duplicated her main vocal on 2 new tracks. One I tweeked to a 3rd lower and the other a 5th. I only want a single word to come out and on some of the oos and aahs. How do I do this by auto punching?
I’m not exactly sure what you’re describing but we have a tutorial on Punch Recording.
Graham,
On a recent project that I came accross. The group did not have anyone to do backup vocals. They want only certain parts reinforced with a harmony. So, I took her takes and copied them on 2 new tracks. One at a 3rd of step down and the other a little lower. How do I mute the parts I don’t want versus the parts I do?
I see. Simple volume automation would do the trick. You could also just cut and paste regions in the arrange window.
Thanks Graham! Do you prefer using triggers on drum versus open mic? I don’t like the bleed over with direct mic.
It depends on the style of music for me. If I’m recording live drums by a good drummer, I prefer to capture the performance of the drummer. There’s tons of potential problems while recording live drums but I think the reward of getting it right is worth the trouble.
I think the “direct mic” approach is sound but my main goal is to capture the drums in their space. Some of my favorite recordings come from unorthodox mic technique. Bleed doesn’t become a problem when it sounds good going to disk.
But augmenting the sound or replacing the sound has its place too. I love mixing live and sequenced drums.
I guess I’m saying that I don’t have much of a preference. Whatever sounds the best!
Graham,
I’ve had problems since upgrading to Snow Leopard and going from Garage Band to Logic 9. Problem is the sound drops out on my apps when I am using my Alesis Multimix 8 firewire audio interface. Alesis had me reinstall some new drivers but I can’t seem to get it to work properly.
I’ve noticed if the sound drops out if I change from 44,100 to 48000 on the Multimix control panel the sound comes back for a while… then goes again in a few minutes.Any tips on Firewire connections of this nature.
Thanks for your time and assistance… I really appreciate it.
Sounds like it could be a hardware or driver issue. I still haven’t upgraded to Snow Leopard.
Hey Graham! just wondering if you know what a “notch filter” is, and if Logic has something of the equivalent. I can’t find anything in tutorials about it
Hey Josh! Your question is answered here: What Is A Notch Filter And How Do I Use It?
I have now switched to a Motu 8 pre connected to my MacBook Pro via firewire… it works very well most of the time, but sometimes there are loud pops and cracks… then it makes white noise. I have to reboot… and all is well. Any ideas what would cause this condition
First thing I look for with pops and crackles is my I/O buffer. Go for the lowest possible I/O buffer size that doesn’t cause them.
Make sure you have the latest MOTU drivers installed.
If you have firewire drives daisy chained with your MOTU, sometimes they can go to sleep or wake up and introduce artifacts. Only connect what’s necessary to get the job done.
The white noise thing though, that’s something that’s been discussed a lot here. Google “white noise logic pro” and you’ll find a ton of results too.
If you find what it is, let me know!
