Kurstin also found useful the Evoc PS 20 Vocoder synth, which he used on several tracks including “Everyone’s At It,” “The Fear,” “Not Fair,” “Back to the Start,” “Chinese,” and “Who’d of Known.” “Frequently I’d play the chords of the chorus on the vocoder, sidechaining the lead vocal. I’d usually turn it way down, sometimes adding the guitar amp; it really helped make the chorus pop out.”

While still on the road, then later in his home studio, Taylor produced most of the songs for Kala entirely in Logic Pro, running Logic’s host plug-ins and virtual instruments on the same well-traveled laptop. “Pretty much everything on Kala was done within Logic,” says Taylor.

Using a remote Logic-based songwriting workflow, band members recorded their ideas in Logic then shared them via email and iDisk with each other and Price, who, a continent away, added drum loops, keyboard lines, and other effects to the songs before sending them back to Vegas.
