Logic Pro Track Freeze

When a track is frozen, all automation and processing is applied, and the channel's plugins are disabled. The Freeze function can be used on Audio and Software Instrument tracks to save CPU power and memory.

To freeze a track, click the Freeze (*) button in the track header area and selecting either Source Only or Pre Fader in the track's Inspector. Source Only does not apply plugins to the track. This option is used to conserve memory resources. Pre Fader mode applies plugins. The freeze files will be created after Play is activated.

It is important to note that tracks cannot be edited when frozen, except for effect send levels, panning, and volume/mute/solo.

Tracks can be unfrozen by clicking the Freeze button of the frozen track. Doing so will delete the freeze file and reload all unloaded plugins and instruments.

The Freeze function in Logic is a useful way to save processing power and memory. It allows you to apply all of your plugins and automation before disabling them - meaning that your audio file is processed without the need for more CPU or RAM power. Freezing an Audio track creates a new audio file in the Pool, while freezing Software Instrument tracks generates an audio file without disabling any instruments. To use it, simply select how many tracks you want to freeze and click on the Freeze Function icon. Logic will take care of the rest!

When you want to freeze a track in your audio production, you select the Freeze (*) button found in the track header area. You can then select either Source Only or Pre Fader mode in the track's Inspector. Choosing Source Only will not apply plugins to the track and is used when conserving memory resources. On the other hand, selecting Pre Fader freezes tracks with plugins applied. After using this option, the freeze files are created once Play is activated and you're ready to work with your frozen audio track!
