You can record MIDI in four ways:

  1. Take recording
  2. Multitrack recording
  3. Merge recording
  4. Replace recording

MIDI Take Recording

MIDI Take recording has multiple approaches:

  1. Recording a single take creates a single MIDI region.
  2. Recording multiple takes creates multiple MIDI regions packed into a single take folder.
  • To record a single MIDI take, select a MIDI track and click the record button in the transport bar.
  • To record multiple takes, first select Create Take Folders in the Recording pane of the Project Settings. Then, turn on cycle mode, adjust the cycle position, click record in the transport bar, and record as many cycles as you require.

MIDI Multitrack recording

MIDI Multitrack recording has multiple approaches:

  • You can record multiple MIDI tracks simultaneously or successively in cycle mode.
  • To record to multiple tracks simultaneously, click the record enable button on each track you wish to record, and click record in the transport bar.

There are two MIDI multitrack recording modes:

  1. Layer recording: A MIDI region is created on the selected track and Aliases are created on the other record enabled tracks. The advantage to layer recording is that the aliases always follow the edits of the parent track, allowing you to edit a group of tracks while only actually editing a single track. This technique works well with layered bass sounds and similar material. You can have multiple layered bass sounds and you only need to edit one of them while the aliases will follow the edits.
  2. Multiplayer recording: Recorded MIDI is distributed to the record enabled tracks on the corresponding MIDI channel. If a corresponding MIDI channel is not found, it will be routed to the selected track. This is useful for general MIDI devices or drum machines that distribute different sounds on separate MIDI channels.
  • To switch from Layer recording mode to Multiplayer recording mode, select "Auto demix by channel if multitrack recording" in the Recording pane of the Project Settings.

MIDI Merge recording

MIDI merge recording adds new material to an existing MIDI region.

  • You can merge the new recording with the selected region by choosing "Merge with selected regions" in the Recording pane of the Project Settings.
  • You can limit the merge to the cycle record settings by choosing "Merge only in Cycle record" in the Recording pane of the Project Settings.

MIDI Replace recording

MIDI Replace recording replaces old material with new material.

  • To replace events in a MIDI region, choose "Merge with selected regions" in the Recording pane of the Project Settings, and click the Replace button in the transport bar.
