MIDI

The MIDI (Music Instrument Digital Interface) Protocol enables compatible devices to send and receive data. It was created to allow hardware to speak to each other. MIDI is the protocol Logic Pro uses to play and record software instruments, automation, and external MIDI hardware.

MIDI does not contain audio. Your external MIDI devices still need their audio to be routed into your computer and Logic Pro.

Digital Audio

Digital audio is essentially analog signals turned into digits, or numbers. The Sample Rate is how often a slice of analog is turned into a digit each second. The higher the sample rate, the higher the fidelity. Bit Rate is the number of bits of information processed each second. Higher bit rate, high sample resolution.

Recording at 24kbps (bit rate) and 96kHz (sample rate), 1 minute of stereo digital audio will be 33MB with a resolution over 250 times higher than 16kbps/44.1kHz.

The only downside of using a higher bit rate or sample rate is that it takes up more drive space.

As a general rule, record at 24kbps and choose the sample rate based on your hardware limitations or the project. Video projects usually have a sample rate of 48kHz. CDs are 41.1kHz. It's always better to convert your sample rate down than up, so begin your project with as high a sample rate as possible if you're looking for higher fidelity.
