Remix Songs Faster with Logic Pro’s Stem Splitter

Remix Songs Faster with Logic Pro’s Stem Splitter

You don’t need access to the original stems to remix a track anymore.

With the updated Stem Splitter in Logic Pro 11.2, you can extract up to six individual instrument parts from a stereo audio file—even if it’s fully mixed. That means vocals, drums, bass, guitar, piano, and other instruments can all be isolated and dropped into your session as editable tracks.

It’s fast, surprisingly accurate, and extremely useful for remixers, educators, live performers, and producers working with samples or full songs.

Here’s how to do it—step by step.

🎚️ How to Extract Stems with Stem Splitter

Step 1: Control-Click the Audio File

Find the stereo file you want to split in the Tracks area.

Control-click the region, and you’ll get a pop-up menu.

Step 2: Choose Stem Splitter

From the pop-up, choose:
Processing > Stem Splitter

This opens the Stem Splitter window.

Step 3: Pick What You Want to Extract

You’ve got two options here:

  • Use a preset to instantly grab a standard combo (like vocals + drums + bass).
  • Manually select the exact stems you want by checking/unchecking boxes.

Want to isolate just the piano and vocals? Check those two.
Want everything separated? Check all six.

Don’t want to extract something? Leave it unchecked, and Logic will group those leftovers into a submix.

Step 4: (Optional) Create a Submix

If you left a few stem boxes unchecked, Logic will automatically bundle those together.

To include that submix in your project, tick the Submix checkbox at the bottom of the window.

You can even click the More button and fine-tune what’s included in the submix.

Step 5: Click Apply

Now click Apply.

Here’s what Logic does next:

  • It mutes the original region.
  • It creates a summing stack directly below.
  • Inside the stack, you’ll find your selected stems as new audio tracks.

Each one is fully editable.

Want to solo the bass? Click the solo button.
Want to time-stretch just the vocals? Go for it.
Want to chop the drums into slices and rearrange them? Be my guest.

Step 6: Edit the Stems

Now you can:

  • Solo any part to hear it in isolation.
  • Drag, copy, or edit each stem like any other audio region.
  • Apply plug-ins, pitch correction, flex editing, or anything else.

It’s just audio, treated like any other track.

Pro Tip: Assign a Key Command

If you're going to use Stem Splitter frequently (and you will), assign a custom key command to your favorite preset.

That way, you can split stems with a single keystroke—no window required.

To do this:

  1. Open Logic Pro > Key Commands > Edit.
  2. Search for Stem Splitter.
  3. Choose a preset and assign your shortcut.

Now you’re one hotkey away from instant stem separation.

Recap

You just took a fully mixed stereo file and cracked it open like a six-pack. Vocals, drums, bass, guitar, piano, and everything else are right there, ready to work with.

No stems from the artist? No problem.
No multitrack session? Doesn’t matter.
Just drop in the file, split it, and start producing.

That’s Stem Splitter in Logic Pro 11.2. And that’s one less excuse not to make the remix.
