Flex Modes

Flex mode settings determine how the audio will be affected, using either a compression or expansion algorithm, or by speeding up or slowing down the material.

Assign a track's flex mode by clicking the Flex Mode button in the arrange track list or by doing the same in the Track Parameter box. The selected mode will be assigned to all regions and takes across the track. Regions and take folders may be excluded by selecting them and deselecting the Flex checkbox in the Inspector's Region Parameter box.

The same flex mode may be assigned to all tracks by holding Shift while opening the Flex Mode pop-up menu in the arrange track list and choosing a mode, or by doing the same in the Inspector's Track Parameter box.

The Flex Modes are:

  • Off - all Flex Time properties are disabled on the track
  • Slicing - designed for drums and percussion, audio is sliced at transient markers. Start times are affected but the audio that follows is left unaffected. Resultant gaps can be filled using the decay function.
    • Fill gaps turns the decay function on or off
    • Decay sets the decay time between gaps
    • Slick Length shortens slices by a percentage. This can be used to create a gated effect.
  • Rhythmic - good for polyphonic material such as keyboard parts, rhythm guitar, and Apple Loops, stretches material so no gaps are left between the slices.
    • Loop Length establishes the length of a loop
    • Decay establishes a decay value for the looped area
    • Loop Offset moves the looped area up to 100ms to the left
  • Monophonic - best used on monophonic instruments such as vocal or bass lines. The only parameter in this mode is Percussive, which can be used to protect the percussive part of the sound. This option is best for monophonic tonal material such as guitar or bass strings and tonal percussion.
  • Polyphonic - recommended for harmony instruments, like guitar, piano, or a choir, stretches audio without affecting the pitch. This produces the highest quality result, but also requires the most processing power. The single parameter in this mode, Complex, enables more internal transients within the material.
  • Tempophone - designed to be used for effect, Tempophone flex mode emulates a historical tape-based time-stretching devices of the same name, producing artifacts.
    • Grain Size sets the size of grains played at a single speed and inserted to create time compression or expansion.
    • Crossfade can be adjusted from 0.00 (hard artifacts) to 1.00 (soft effect).
  • Speed flex - mostly useful for non-pitch based material, like percussion, this mode simply plays material slower or faster and includes the resultant pitch change.
