Time and Pitch Machine

This function can be used to compress and expand audio as well as transpose pitch. To use this function select the area of audio to be processed, then select Factory > Time and Pitch Machine (Control-P). Several options are then provided. First the Mode menu:

  • Free (the most common setting) - pitch and tempo adjustments can be made independently
  • Classic - pitch and tempo are linked (think of a tape machine)

Next the Algorithm menu:

  • Version 5 - can be used on most audio, it imparts color
  • Any Material - suitable for most types of audio material
  • Monophonic - good for monophonic content, e.g., a voice, brass instrument, woodwind, etc.
  • Pads - good for polyphonic content, e.g., string section, choirs
  • Rhythmic Material - good for drums and rhythmic instruments like rhythm guitar, clavinet
  • Beats Only - good for drum loops, this algorithm preserves rhythmic timing of content
  • Universal - good for any kind of audio material, this is the default mode
  • Complex - good for natural sounding results when time stretching complicated material, such as mixes or orchestral material
  • Percussive - this mode is similar to Beats Only but should be used when the content is affected with reverb; this mode also works well for dry drum recordings

Tempo Parameters:

  • Tempo Change - allows the tempo to be changed by a percentage
  • Tempo - set the original and desired tempos in BPM
  • Length in Samples - displays the selection length in samples
  • Length in SMPTE - displays the selection length in SMPTE time
  • Length in Bars - displays the selection length in bars, beats, divisions, and ticks

Pitch Parameters:

  • Transposition - allows selection to be pitched shifted (up or down) by the selected number of cents; 100 cents = one semitone (or half-step), therefore 1200 cents would pitch shift the selection up one octave
  • Harmonic Correction - preserves the characteristic of the original content as to avoid unnatural sounding results (chipmunk voices)
